This practice-based research presentation will draw on examples from my own experience using Somax - an environment developed by the Musical Representation team at IRCAM - in directing and conducting student ensembles in AI-driven co-creative experiences.
My goal is to investigate the nature of creativity in the light of AI-driven Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and how the technologies involved in these processes may contribute to knowledge production and epistemological insight into co-creative processes, while avoiding the amphibologies - or conceptual inconsistencies - that can result from applying traditional philosophical notions to this domain. I hope to thus explore the nature of the convergence of science, technology and aesthetics with regard to the notions of creativity and co-creativity in music. The practice of ensemble improvisation in conjunction with the use of co-creativity software such as Somax offers a heuristic method opening up a possible avenue for facing these questions, in which the sound object is constructed at the same time as the knowledge of this object. To better understand this aspect, we need to be able to interpret interdisciplinarity in relation to the science and aesthetics of Somax in a way that runs counter to the classical conception of the concept, and thus erase the phenomenological distance between subject and object.
