Supporting people to be physically active through technology remains an important challenge. Recent works have identified psychological and emotional barriers to physical activity related to body perception. My PhD project aims at creating a novel approach to support physically inactive people in physical activity, through movement sonification. In this work, I propose the design of a wearable device and a gesture-sound palette that allow a range of body movement sonifications aimed to alter body perception. The final aim is to address psychological and emotional barriers related to the perception of one’s body, impact on attitudes towards one’s body and physical activity, and ultimately change behaviour. In my presentation, I will discuss the key research questions, objectives, and possible contributions to technology that can increase or enhance physical activity in inactive people.
