Stryx
Derived from the greek strigx, “night bird”, a winged female devil, half-woman and half-bird, shouting squeals at night.
Ovide wrote, in book VI from Fastes: “There exists voracious, enormous-headed and fixed-eyed birds, with a sharp bill designed for rapine, white feathers and hooked claws. One says that they tear the entrails of those who were fed only with milk so far, and that they like to get drunk from drinking their blood. They are called “stryges” after the sinister shout by which they terrorize the night”.
