La géographie des villes au bord de l’eau (2009)

Peu avant mon vingt et unième anniversaire, j’ai cessé de tomber amoureux de personnes pour m’éprendre de villes. Ce n’était pas une conversion préméditée. Un jour, j’ai simplement cessé de mater les cuisses et les sourires et je me suis retrouvé attiré par des tramways et des pavés, des réverbères et des arcades.
Au début, vous pensez que chaque rencontre est unique, pure, authentique. Par la suite, vous commencez à vous rendre compte que vous avez un type : avec des rues sans caractère, de préférence conduisant vers l’amont à une vue sur l’eau. Des façades penchées s’effritant, restes d’une grandeur déchue. Tanger, Dubrovnik, Bonifacio, Istanbul... pourrez-vous être toujours fidèle ? I y a toujours une autre beauté galvaudée de bord de mer, (Marseille ? Valparaiso ? Zanzibar ? Le Cap ?), à une envolée de là…

Shortly before my twenty-first birthday I stopped falling in love with people and started falling for cities instead. The Geography of Cities on Water is a collection of overlapping snapshots, memories with blurred edges which sometimes spill over into one another—the way you can stare at the Sultanahmet skyline and think about San Francisco: Pulling into the Grand Harbour after an hour of nothing but open water... Riding tramways over concentric canals in Amsterdam... Hearing the Gonzaga fanfare to open the Regatta on the grand canal, four days after Hurricane Katrina... A long chord of ships’ horns floating from the Bosphorus to my balcony on the morning of November 10th...
